+O'Neill: Do we really need a Communion?

As the bishops of the worldwide Anglican Communion prepare to gather next month at the Lambeth Conference -- a gathering held only once every 10 years -- many people are waiting to see if our global Communion of 38 independent churches can remain unified in the face of deep disagreements, ostensibly over issues of human sexuality.

But the real question is not can we stay together, but do we really want or need unity within the Anglican Communion?

There is now an official archive of the recent Anglican Covenant Conference at General Seminary's Tutu Center.  Each presentation is available as a PDF; most are also available to listen to as MP3s.

Cyprus Agreement

I'm searching for a copy of the Anglican-Orthodox dialogue's The Church of the Truine God: The Cyprus Agreed Statement to make available to the diocese. It is not currently available online, though it can be purchased from Church House Publishing in England.

[Note 5/15: I now have a copy through a friend. It can be ordered through Episcopal Books and Resources here, though mine has yet to arrive even after a few weeks of waiting.]

Bonn Agreement of 1931

Ecumenical Agreement between Anglicans and the Old Catholic Churches, which incorporates these three principles:

1. Each Communion recognizes the catholicity and independence of the other and maintains its own.
2. Each Communion agrees to admit members of the other Communion to participate in the Sacraments.
3. Full Communion does not require from either Communion the acceptance of all doctrinal opinion, sacramental devotion or liturgical practice characteristic of the other, but implies that each believes the other to hold all the essentials of the Christian faith.

Communion, Conflict and Hope: the Kuala Lumpur Report

The ACNS has released the Kuala Lampur Report focusing on the nature of the Communion and on questions about how the Church's unity can be sustained during times of intense disagreement. The third Inter-Anglican Theological and Doctrinal Commission, appointed after 1998 and chaired by Bishop Stephen Sykes, had these questions as part of its mandate and Communion, Conflict and Hope is the outcome of its deliberations.
